"Ending year long MBT Therapy"

About: Community Forensic Services / Nottinghamshire MBT Service

(as a service user),

I have recently ended year long MBT Therapy with the Notts MBT Service.

I have found engaging in the group has made me pay more attention to how I mentalise about daily events or situations in my life. Therefore, I am able to think about events more rationally and in a more effective way - rather than jumping to conclusions or doing negative thinking techniques. The group enabled me to meet people with the same condition as myself and helped me feel less isolated and less alienated.

Throughout the therapy I have developed a further and deeper understanding of BPD and how it affects my life and why, this will help me in the future to understand myself, feelings and emotions and help understand the causes of these. The therapy has also helped me to face difficult events, feelings and emotions, giving me ways to think and go through things in a way I can tolerate better, without worsening the emotions and feelings as much as usual.

The only times I found the group less helpful was when I didn’t get chance to discuss my event (this was a very rare occasion. This was difficult, as I had planned something that I felt like I needed to discuss and I was unable to. The only thing I would say to change about the group is that the size of the group should be small, luckily the group I was in was small and between 4-6 members usually. I think any more members than this the group would need to be longer.

The facilitators in my group were Amy and Tom, both of which were, in my opinion, excellent. Both facilitators were very kind, caring and considerate to all members in the group. They both ensured that the conversation was to the point and focused on the therapy. They also had a very good balance between the group members talking and the facilitators themselves. This gave us all chance to say our opinions and thoughts but also be able to consider the additional aspects that the facilitators added. I wouldn’t change anything to do with the way they conducted the therapy sessions or how they contributed towards the sessions. I feel very lucky to have had two great people to help me in my therapy.

I would like to thank both Amy and Tom for their support and hard work throughout my MBT therapy. I think the service is very effective and helpful and there is little improvement that could be made.

Thank you for the opportunity for this experience and therapy.

Thank you so much for this lovely feedback and thoughtful reflections on your engagement with MBT Therapy and how it has positively impacted on your life. I will ensure the comments about your experience of the facilitators are shared with the team and I am pleased you found the model, the facilitators and the group process so helpful.

It is really important to acknowledge your own motivation and commitment to engage within the therapy process, being able to open up, share and hear others is key in the success of therapy. We know this can be difficult, so we hope this is something you are proud of.

We appreciate the comments you made regarding the size of the groups. As you are probably aware, reducing the group sizes is something we have had to introduce due to our response to COVID/social distancing measures and we will be using these experiences as an opportunity to review and reflect on the impact of the reduced group size and how this has impacted on our delivery of services. Your comments will help us with this reflection and inform any changes we make going forward.

Wishing you all the very best for the future, Louisa

After a review of the MBT programme, alongside continuing COVID restrictions, we are continuing to maintain smaller group sizes for the current time (up to 6 group members). After careful consideration, we intend to resume usual group sizes (up to 8 group members) when COVID restrictions ease. We feel on balance this offers a good size for group therapy, for sharing minds and ensuring some consistency in groups/supporting regular attendance and therefore offering service users the best group experience.

Best wishes, Louisa
