"Hit & Miss"

About: The Whittington Hospital

This is my first pregnancy. I've recieved a good standard of care from the Midwives I've come into contact with.

On the other hand the support & reception staff at the Labour Ward & Maternity centre have either been a) unorganised or b) downright rude.

I've been particularly disappointed in how I & my partner were treated at the 12 week scan by our sonographer yesterday. This should have been a joyous occasion for us seeing our baby for the first time. I'm not sure how it happened that despite baby being healthy, we left feeling utterly deflated by the sonographers dour attitude! I was left at such an angle on the table I couldn't see the screen when shown, my partner was told to "get back" when he leaned forward for a closer view (being around 5ft from the screen). We didn't have any explanation at what we were looking at on screen, nor did we have the chance to hear the heartbeat- I'm told one of the most special moments to have. I understand that this is a busy department, but I would still expect the same level of care as received by the Midwives. There was no malpractice here, so not worth going through PALS, but more of a reminder that it may be the sonographer's 50th scan that day, but its the parents first so to be mindful of that. Some friendly chatter (of course once they've checked everything is ok) wouldn't go amiss.

Dear Kathryn,

Thank you for taking the time to leave feedback regarding your care. We hope this finds you well.

We are pleased to hear that you have received a good standard of care from our midwives, but sorry to hear that you had a less positive experience with Maternity support and reception staff, and the Imaging department.

If you would like the PALS & Complaints team to raise your concerns with the individual services, they would be happy to hear from you. You can contact them on 020 7288 5551 or via email at whh-tr.whitthealthpals@nhs.net

We will ensure in any case that your comments are shared with service and senior directorate managers so they are all made aware and can share your feedback with relevant colleagues.

Best wishes
