On 5th December 2020 I went for a routine eye test and was told by the optician that I had a detached retina and needed urgent treatment. I tried to contact my local hospital but was unable to get through to them. I travelled to the Birmingham and Midland Eye Hospital. I was seen promptly and operated on within a couple of hours.
Now, I am extremely nervous when it comes to hospitals. When I was told that surgery was required I actually cried with fear. I was quickly reassured and comforted by the doctor who had examined me, and that set the tone for my whole experience at the Eye Centre. I cannot thank every member of staff who has had a part in my care enough. Care is the operative word in that sentence, they really care. My operation had to be done under local anaesthetic so I was awake and very frightened. They put music on for me and someone held my hand throughout the whole procedure. They were exceptionally professional throughout. Kind and courteous to me and to each other.
That set the tone for all of my post operative care. Everyone, receptionist, nurses and doctors were fantastic. They took the time to explain everything to me and to listen to me. My appointment times were kept to, no long waits. I found the hospital to be very clean which was a big concern given covid. The welcoming staff were organised and in good spirits.
I had the privilege today of being examined by top person. What a perfect gentleman. He displayed all the qualities that I found in the staff.
I want to thank him and everyone at the City Hospital Eye Centre. You are outstanding. You saved my sight and I hope you are all very proud of yourselves: because you should be.
"Outstanding"
