Our Dad was recently admitted to G South in IRH and received outstanding care right up until the point he passed. We felt it important that we expressed as a family how the personalised and compassionate care demonstrated by all the staff including healthcare support workers, medics and nurses made such a difference to what was such a traumatic time for us.
Dad was elderly and admitted with underlying health conditions and screened positive for COVID. We were terrified as a family that we wouldn’t be able to be with Dad and he could end up alone and distressed. I was updated daily by Dr Simmons his consultant and we were made to feel at the centre of any decisions regarding his treatments and ongoing care. At every single stage of his journey we were briefed and contacted, we were never ‘told’ which gave me such confidence what to do. The ward were led by our wishes for Dads end of life care and we were able to be with him.
Every nurse introduced themselves and I can’t relay our grateful thanks enough to Kim, Kerri, Laura, Kirsty, Nicola, Pamela, Sophie, Mary and Alex who were on shift and caring for Dad through his short admission. Each one of you were so attentive we were so touched by your compassion and empathy to our situation even though COVID and it’s impacts touch you all daily.
You made for us and Dad what could have been a horrific experience into a dignified and personalised passing with all his family with him. We will be forever grateful for that. Teresa the senior Charge Nurse was a great support for us all and I can see how her leadership, empathy and compassionate skills is relayed throughout the team. Dr Simmons and all the medics and staff were outstanding and there at every point we needed them, we can’t thank you all enough ♥️🌈
