I am autistic and was diagnosed age 39. This story can be summed up in the curious incident dog in the night or it all about communication autism. Bear in mind here i have trouble in basic communications where negotiation is required and struggle even though im technically High functioning. also bear in mind the autism comes first. no blame first.
I needed help communication with family member. The police put in a letter of concern to my good gp who referred me to cornhill hospital (having since looked through records they did not have this in there files or mention it apparently). Not that i could find.
Iv was living in my own flat and I made it clear in emails i wanted mediation simple as that. however i was bombarding them as they were ignoring emails and helping me the way they wanted ie assertive course do it yourself. On top of this i was using Samaritans and i copied in at least one email to Cornhill To show this. Short story i was going up wall phoning samaritans neighbours were complaining council giving me housing warnings and one assault against me in my own flat all ignored by cornhill. I was not getting support and had to live with parent as fear losing flat and being kicked out by council would be worse id be homeless. I was shouted at on one ocassion by the doctor and as i letf i heard what i thought was the door being slammed behind me.
At end of year I was at Cornhill i was booted out while i am still using samaritans to cope etc and still getting housing warnings. I then went back to new gp at Aberdeen who shut me up from talking like the doctor in cornhill, threatened me with charging for printing off emails and when i asked for new gp i was refused. That weekend because of him I was on phone to samaritans 16 times.
I went to new GP who actually listened helped with a new referral again to autism doctor.
Mean while i am under social work after 7 notes of concern by the police and i met them ten times in total. I am under stress as is my parent so i asked for help communicating with parent over procedural issues and a job issue but the support people refused never. Given I'm autsitic and need help with communication which could be daily weekly this undermined my confidence by this time in the whole city of Aberdeen. Edinburgh is world class by comparison.
Cornhill have now said -Sorry
I am now severely traumatised and have had to create an advance statement that says when in these situations in future i need help with communication they must help or get someone who can help not tell me to do it myself and if they don't i could have grave consequences. Emphasis on word "Grave" as in 6ft under the ground.
I was left hanging on to life for now 6 years this city did not eeven know if an adult ask for helps with communicating they should do that and the whole thing has struck fear and terror into me now. hopefully the advance statement will prevent this in future but one mistake form this city again i leave.
All i did was ask for help communicating with situation that could be solved in 2 hours 6 years later im traumatised and live in fear it ever happens again. So much for asking all these support people doctors for help i was nearly dead.
On looking through records we found as suspected the police notes of concern two of them that cornhill did see were sent to the mental health officer who could not communicate with the big doctor and he made decisions on my health with massive consequences without that information
Autism understanding for adults is very poor in aberdeen in my opinion and an autsim dioc expressed similar views.
The hospital has since said sorry got the feedback from me and an advance statement is now in the hospital files so should i go there again. they will know asking me to communicate myself wont work. I am now under social work with support workers helping me try to recover from it all.
It is now costing the council social work part a fortune. my confidence in others and self esteem is in ashes
"autism"
