We wanted to say a big thank you to the staff of the children’s ward in SWAH each and everyone; nurses, nursing assistants, activity nurse, catering staff, domestics and porters worked as a team to make our stay much more bearable. My daughter had surgery and the staff helped to reassure us throughout the whole experience! All staff have a difficult enough job and this has been added to with all the covid regulations and extra PPE but they all took it in their stride and with a smile 😃. When you step inside the children’s ward you would not know there are extensive NHS pressures and a global pandemic going on outside the door and this is due to the professionalism and dedicated care of this amazing team. A special thank you to Joe(for the laughs), Tamara, Aisling, Maureen, Amy and Angela. I’m sure we have missed some special people if so I’m sorry you are all wonderful. Stay safe and stay strong from Aisling and Eimear x
As you will see from the above message on the whole we were very appreciative of the care my young daughter received in SWAH children’s ward however I felt it is important to note that the surgeon she was under was extremely lacking in bedside manner particularly for working with children. From our experience we found this member of staff rude and dismissive to my daughter and myself. My daughter felt intimidated by their bed side manner and we felt that the reports of how she was feeling were not documented correctly which we felt was inexcusable. When a clinical diagnosis is necessary it impacts on creating an accurate clinical picture.
The nursing staff had to ask this staff member to come back and explain the situation to me her mother. This is totally unacceptable and when the other members of the team go above and beyond it is a blight on their work. Another senior member of staff came to see us and their manner was in total contrast to what we had experienced, this staff member was clear caring and respectful. They spoke both to me and to my daughter and took time to discuss the surgery in a child friendly manner and we extend our thanks to them.
