"Midwife being cheeky"

About: The Princess Royal Maternity Unit / Maternity care (wards 68, 72 &73)

(as a service user),

This is my second pregnancy and let’s just say my last pregnancy was the pregnancy from hell (I have a heart shaped womb/hyperemesis gravidarum was hospitalised last time a few times/I suffer badly with urine infections one turning into sepsis at 30 weeks pregnant I also suffered with slight high blood pressure.

My care last time was shocking and I put in numerous complaints but got nowhere.

This time I phoned up because I was being sick/ feeling drowsy and had a rash that was coming and going I also had a splitting headache.

The nurse I phoned in the maternity assessment asked how many weeks I was I told them I wasn’t sure but roughly between 7-12 weeks as haven’t had my antenatal appointment yet. I told them I’m a high risk pregnancy though and outlined everything I had wrong.

This nurse informed me that they don’t see woman under 17 weeks and I said oh ok I said who do I phone then and they said phone your doctor. I asked if this was a new system and they said no this has always been the case. I said no I’ve never had to phone a doctor with my last pregnancy I always went straight up or phoned maternity assessment. This person made out I was talking rubbish and kept saying phone your doctor. I said that if I get any worse I will be making my way up. I informed them I had been hospitalised twice before 17 weeks pregnant last time.

They were patronising me, I said I should get a scan sooner as well and they  said we don’t just give scans out you need to be at certain weeks and I said no I had 3 scans with my son before I was 13 weeks. I was nearly in tears because my last pregnancy was horrific and all they were doing was not offering any advice not being compassionate or nothing next they said I’m going to terminate this call now as this is an emergency line and then hung up. I was so angry (they basically saying am not an emergency I was concerned I had an infection or sepsis again and I told her I had sepsis last time).

Absolutely disgusting and this is just the start of my pregnancy (I will not let things go this time and for staff to treat me wrong and get things wrong like they did last time).

Dear Dorisdayno1,

Thank-you so much for taking the time to post your concerns and I would wish to reassure you that we not only take all feedback seriously but we would also wish to use your experience to improve care delivery going forward for yourself and others accessing our services.

I was sorry to read that you had such a difficult pregnancy previously and I would have hoped that when seeking support and advice so early on within this pregnancy that you would have not been left to feel frustrated or dismissed. It would be our usual practice within the early stages of pregnancy to signpost women contacting us to the appropriate department or service with both compassion and reassurance. I was sorry to read this was not your experience and I will feed this back to the maternity assessment department.

Although we would not usually review women in early pregnancy within maternity assessment your pregnancy and clinical history should be fully reviewed by staff on the phone. This would enable them to refer you to the early pregnancy assessment unit if there are any immediate concerns regarding your pregnancy or to your GP. Your GP can be best placed to review or treat you if you are displaying symptoms that may not be related to pregnancy or due to an underlying condition exacerbated through pregnancy.

A scan can be arranged when you contact the maternity booking line and carried out to date your pregnancy usually between 12-14 weeks. There can be times that a scan requires to be carried out earlier and your GP or midwife can also arrange this for you.

I am very disappointed that you put in numerous complaints during your last pregnancy which you feel got nowhere and would wish to address these and your current concerns as soon as possible. I would be happy to meet with you if you contact me at Princess Royal Maternity on 0141 211 3336 or I could arrange for the Senior Charge Midwife for EPAS/ Maternity Assessment Vivien Crichton to contact you as I would wish all women to have confidence to access our service and to recieve empathetic support on every occasion.

I hope that you have now met with your community midwife and feeling better, nausea can be challenging to manage in early pregnancy and we are here to support you in any way we can,

Kind regards,

Vicki Mazzoni,

Lead Midwife

Update posted by dorisdayno1 (a service user)

Hi I have tried contacting you on the number given in the last few days.

I have experienced more failings within this hospital and in particular that same person at pregnancy assessment ward has treated me appalling yet again and I’m absolutely livid.

I have asked for a complaints form to be told they don’t have complaints forms.

I then had a midwife come down and speak to me only to basically make up rubbish excuses.

I'm really not happy and I will not be letting this go.
