"Caring staff in tough times"

About: The Ulster Hospital / Emergency Department The Ulster Hospital / General Surgery (Ward 3D) The Ulster Hospital / Neely Ward

(as the patient),

Last week I was in Neely ward for 5 days admitted from A and E as a potential surgery patient. What struck me was how hard the staff were working in a busy full ward day and night. The effects of under resourcing and working through a pandemic was obvious and I am sure staff are exhausted.  I appreciated the care and concern shown by those nurses who clearly 'knew the ropes'. Being offered human connection, conversation and concern when in a lot of pain, means so much particularly when visitors are not permitted. Thanks Hannah and Clare and a special shout out to Mary who went out of her way to find me gluten free toast!

My experience was not all reassuring, with many staff new to the ward or appearing inexperienced requiring supervision, maybe due to staffing shortages? In 5 days, 7 different surgeons spoke briefly to me and while I understand the enormous pressures they are under, continuity and taking time to explain would have really helped to give clarity and reduce anxiety.

Thank you to the staff who keep on going, when patients return home still you go on.

Dear caringbd65

Thank you for sharing your experience.

It is great to hear that staff looked after you so well - including the small things that are important to our patients.

I appreciate your comments regarding continuity, the number of different surgeons speaking to you and the importance of taking the time to explain and discuss care. These points will be considered as we seek opportunity to continually improve the experience of our patients.

Our staff will greatly appreciate your kind words.

Best wishes

Conor

Hi caringbd65

Thank you for taking the time to tell us of your experience.

I hope you are continuing to improve.

While you do not discuss your ED experience other than to say you were admitted from ED, I do hope it was a positive one.

Regards

Jenny

Interim Lead Nurse ED
