I called my doctor after finding blood in my stool. Fast-tracked a bowel screening test and six days later I was in hospital for a colonoscopy which showed I had a tumour. After an appointment with my consultant surgeon, who explained everything to me and advised that the CT scan showed it hadn't spread I had an appointment with the pre-assessment nurse, Nicola, who was fantastic and took me through everything that was going to happen and what to expect.
I have to say, it was six weeks between talking to my GP and undergoing surgery to remove the tumour (I was very impressed with the speed at which things happened, especially during this pandemic). I am at home now and my time in hospital with the surgeon, registrar, the anaestheologist team was very well managed and very thoughtful to my needs and my nerves. When I was in the HDU Staff Nurse Kelly and Student Nurse Ana were a godsend, I thank them all very much.
