"Original ASD Assessment over a year ago"

About: Community paediatrics north Lanarkshire

(as a parent/guardian),

My two younger children (currently aged 14 & 16) were launched into the ASD process in 2018 & 2019 respectively. Both have had initial assessments both had speech therapy assessments over a year ago. I have NO idea where my daughter is on the wait list and my son is 6 mths behind those apparently assessed in 2019. Nobody communicates, getting answers is a nightmare! Both are struggling with lockdown especially the 16 (almost 17) year old. Part of the reason we agreed to her being assessed in the first place was that a diagnosis may help with the university application process etc. It’s mind blowing! ! ! I’m at my wits end and don’t know what to do next

Dear CarolineG

We are aware that the current system is clunky and slow and this has been exacerbated by covid restrictions. We are working towards a new pathway and approach but that is taking time to introduce and is also still being affected by Covid restrictions. We know this has a detrimental impact on people in the meantime and apologies for these delays.

If you could contact me next week I'll try and see where things are at for your children. Please contact our Motherwell clinic on 01698 269651, if you leave your name, details of your children concerned and a contact number I will be in touch directly with you.

Thank you for taking the time to post a comment.

I would just like to provide a further update on our proposed service change. We have begun to implement our new pathway for children with possible neurodevelopment conditions including Autism and Autism Spectrum Disorder. We have a large backlog of referrals and still receive large numbers of new referrals but we expect the new pathway to be much more efficient and reduce the period families need to wait as time progresses.
