"Incidents at ward 4C Gartnavel"

About: Gartnavel General Hospital / Elderly Medicine (wards 2a, 2b, 2c, 3a, 3c, 4c, 5c, 6a, 8a & 8c)

(as a service user),

My mother has been a long term patient in Gartnavel Ward 4C since being transferred from Glasgow Royal Infirmary just before Xmas. I have numerous issues with the level of care on this ward.

My mother suffered post op delirium after a hip operation and was transferred here for  more  physio. During her stay in this ward her confusion became worse and she was treated for a urine infection. she is a diabetic patient and prone to infections. She then had another episode where her confusion became much worse and her urine on this occasion was not showing signs of infection. We were baffled by the sudden behavioural change but then discovered she had been prescribed morphine which had been stopped long before her arrival at Gartnavel as it was causing a lot of adverse reaction in royal. The nurse said she was not in pain so did not understand why it was prescribed.

It was once again stopped and her behaviour improved,   Occupational therapy contacted the family to arrange a home visit with a view to  her discharge but in-between times my mother had a  fall on the ward. The only way  any of our family became aware of this was because my mum told me on facetime. I questioned why we were not informed by staff on ward and was told the night shift  nurse who dealt with it had passed it on to day shift but they failed to pass on.

Next thing we knew she was to go for a  CT scan  and Xray of  hip. The CT scan showed a shadow so an MRI was arranged. We were told she had gone for it on Friday and asked when results would be back to  which nurse replied when they're back. We spent all weekend worrying about results only to discover on Monday night that the MRI had not been carried out due to her having a panic attack. This information should have been  given when we were in touch over weekend.

On Monday  I received a call that her blood sugars had reach a dangerous level of 30 with ketones present. The doctor was helpful and thoroughly explained treatment. I  had   however been asking ward staff to dip her urine since Thursday evening when on facetime I again noticed a decline in her behaviour. I was told they forgot then told they didn't know if staff on other shift had done it.

Certain  nursing staff seem totally unwilling to check notes to update family members. My mum has now seriously declined and does not trust the nursing staff which after my dealings with some of them I can totally understand

Dear LizBetty60

Thank you so much for taking the time to give feedback regarding the care of you mother within Ward 4c at Gartnavel General Hospital, I am sorry to hear that the care received has not been at the standard we would expect and has caused you distress at an already difficult time. Can I please request that you contact Vivienne Davidson, Lead Nurse, on 0141 301 9726 to discuss your concerns and allow her to address areas for improvement. Vivienne is available Monday to Friday from 8am until 4pm. In the meantime I have shared the concerns raised with the Charge Nurse and Senior Charge Nurse in Ward 4C

Kind Regards

Joan Edge
