At the start of January my father had been taken to hospital due to covid 19. He had been in ward 14 for a couple of hours before having to get moved to high dependency due to him declining. He stayed in there for a few days until he had to be moved to intensive care as he was on the maximum amount of oxygen that high dependency could give him.
He stayed in intensive care for a couple of days until he started to improve then was moved back to high dependency. After a couple more days there he got moved to a general covid ward, ward 18. He was there for around a week in total, minus having to get moved back up to high dependency for one night due to a minor 'blip' as the doctors called it.
He has just been discharged today. My father was so ill when he first went into hospital he says he didn't even know where he was. He was very relaxed once he was getting better in intensive care and in high dependency however, once he was moved to ward 18 he started to become very anxious. He was anxious as there were people who had mental health issues who were kicking off and eventually had to be moved into their own rooms.
My father said he did not feel safe when these people were in the ward with him. He was frustrated at one point as he was being told one thing by one doctor then told another thing by another doctor (being told he could be discharged the next day then when the next day came to be told no he couldn't and how someone would say he is doing very well for someone else to say no he still has a long way to go). At one point he was also left on the commode for 40 minutes as there were no staff able to attend to him.
He was also left when getting help with washed as it was the staff members break time. Despite these things mentioned above, overall he was extremely happy with the care that he received.
