"Missed tongue-tie "

About: St Thomas' Hospital (London)

It saddens me to leave this review, as my entire antenatal and delivery experience was excellent. However after delivery, the maternity team missed a severe anterior tongue tie in our baby girl. This is the most obvious form of tongue tie, and should have been very easy to spot. Two independent lactation consultants that we have sought advice from since agree that the Frenular tissue is tethering 60% of the sub-lingual surface.

What does this mean? It meant months of extremely painful breastfeeding, and ultimately at 3 months, her refusing to breastfeed any longer because of how much work it is. I am afraid her weight and growth have also been impacted. This sadly means the end of breastfeeding for us.

This could have been very easily mitigated had there been well trained specialists or a collaboration with paediatric ENT, many of whom practice privately to correct these missed issues.

This issue leave me unable to recommend Guy’s and St Thomas’s.
