My second daughter was delivered at Craigavon Area Hospital in December and my experience was fantastic thanks to the anaesthesia team.
My first section in 2019, resulted in me needing general anaesthesia as my spinal failed.
This time, I had a telephone consultation with Dr Rea to discuss options for delivery half way through my pregnancy. She listened to my story empathetically and suggested a different approach from the previous one.
On the day of delivery -I met with Dr Morrison - anaesthesiologist and he spent time to discuss the options for my section, he thoroughly explained everything and listened attentively to me.
During the section, both Dr Morrison and his colleague (who's name I have forgotten), demonstrated commendable professionalism and expertise. Both explained the procedure as it progressed, offered me reassurance when I was nervous and spent almost 50 minutes tweaking my medication to ensure I was able to experience my daughter being born.
According to the doctor's I am a medical mystery, as my epidural does not travel high enough, but this did not appear to fluster the team at all. They worked through the problem, gave me informed choices and kept the mood relaxed and friendly. I really am so thankful to them! Both gentleman are a credit to their profession and to the SHSCT
My experience of birth during the pandemic has been exceptional. From my antenatal appointments with Dr Shahid, to the care received on the maternity ward by Nurse Brennan.
I am very grateful to the NHS and you should be very proud of the calibre of staff you employ.
