"So thankful for free healthcare"

About: Queen Elizabeth Hospital (Gateshead)

I would like to thank all the staff members - from 111 call handlers to the doctor that referred us for further hospital assessment to the a&e staff that made sure my dad was medically cleared of any serious lung illness from coronavirus. And also the follow-ups since discharge. The NHS isn't perfect (nothing ever really is), as there were a few bumps along the way to getting our concerns addressed, BUT they did a switcheroo and rectified a system error promptly. All through the process (despite being a little bumpy at the start) from the initial screening calls, to speaking with medics/nurses, to eventually going to hospital to receive treatment was nothing but pure and absolute professionalism. Thank you so much and I/my dad feel so so humbled by the hardwork and stress marathon you have to go through to pull everything together and make sure the common people are alright. Other countries are not so lucky/privileged to have or give free access to healthcare for the vulnerable (that is why so many people would risk their lives to travel to the UK to live/survive). And so I am grateful for what we have and I hope this service and the staff/its people that hold it together will survive the pandemic, have their time/space to grieve/catch a breath and then pick back up and thrive in years to come. THANK YOU.

PS. My dad (was bored, so he was just people-watching whilst getting treated) told me about a moment when there was a young girl in the isolation room - initially she was visibly upset about coming into hospital, but the nurse on shift was able to make her smile a bit more as time progressed through their social interactions when receiving her treatment. That is priceless - the true value of nursing represented in motion.
