"The great care my dad received in Ward 24"

About: Glasgow Royal Infirmary / Elderly Medicine (12, 14, 18, 23, 29, 30, 32, 33,35 ,39 & 53) Lightburn Hospital / Elderly Care

(as a relative),

My very elderly father was admitted to Glasgow Royal Infirmary with pneumonia. He was seen in A&E and was admitted to ward 50.

From A&E through to the ward the medical and nursing staff kept us informed throughout about what was happening with him as we were obviously not allowed to be with him. My mum was allowed to see him that night and the next day as he was  extremely ill and it was possible that he wouldn’t survive. That was handled very sensitively by the doctor who was on that night.

He pulled through against all expectations and was transferred to Ward 24. The staff both medical and nursing were excellent at keeping us in touch with regard to his progress. Once the infection was under control he had delirium and his mobility was badly affected. The delirium made him very agitated and he was constantly looking for my mum.

The Charge nurse assessed that for his well-being it was important that he be able to see my mum (who is very elderly herself) and allowed her and I to visit as he was in a single room and with appropriate care we could reduce the risks. This helped him enormously.

I was so impressed with the high standard of nursing care in the ward, both with regards to his physical and mental health. Knowing that he was being looked after by such professional and caring people, made what was a very difficult situation for us as a family so much easier. I cannot praise them highly enough.

My dad was transferred to Ward 4 in Lightburn and although we haven’t been able to see him the communication has been great and his discharge is planned for next week. The OT Karen has been so helpful in helping us prepare for his arrival home. I just want to say a massive thank you to all the staff that cared for my dad in any capacity. It means the world to us!

Dear mhairic,

Thank you for taking the time to contact us and highlighting the care received by your father in several of our ward areas. I am pleased to hear you feel the care, communication and supporting compassionate and flexible visiting to support your father was positive in you experience. We realise this is a very difficult time for patients and their families and I am pleased you feel this has been handled sensitively. I will ensure your kind comments are shared with the teams and trust your father’s health continues to improve after discharge.

Best wishes

John
