"No inclination to treat Endometriosis "

About: University Hospital Lewisham

This hospital has no inclination to diagnose or treat gynaecological conditions like Endometriosis. I was repeatedly sent by GPs to A + E here only to be seen by junior doctors who would tell me my symptoms were nothing. I was kept as an inpatient in the hospital for four days to have a TV scan which was done very dismissively and did not pick anything up. I was not told at any point why I was being kept in and only heard the term ‘endometriosis’ for the first time when I overheard a doctor discussing my symptoms in the corridor. A consultant gynaecologist told me to ‘drink lemon or cranberry juice’ when I said I was suicidal from the pain and referred me to the wrong pain clinic (this appointment was delayed twice before being cancelled altogether). Another consultant casually told me I had ‘six months to a year’ to conceive ‘if I wanted children at all’, without asking me if I was in a relationship (I’d split up with my partner the week before). I raised a PALS complaint and was asked to withdraw it. It took a year to have the meeting with the gynae team that I had requested. All sorts was promised in the meeting: an appointment with one of the consultants, an invite to become an expert patient etc - these promises and reassurances have gone unfounded. I fully believe this department has no inclination to treat this condition and does everything it can to avoid and silence patients like myself. I’ve since moved to another county to try to access NHS treatment and have been astounded at how much clearer the pathways are; how my symptoms are believed and treated without question and how the staff are much more knowledgeable about Endometriosis. In the meantime, I’ve spent over £8,000 on private treatment because I couldn’t get any NHS care in London. This condition is as common as type two diabetes: why don’t you treat it? Why does this hospital and this department do everything it can to shirk responsibility for womxn like myself? I’ll be raising this with the health ombudsman, my local MP, the health minister and anyone else I can get hold of, as my PALS case has clearly been marked as closed and I cannot see any improvements have been made so that future patients don’t have to go through what I did.
