I have been meaning to write a review of my first experience of birth 19 months ago, but due to one thing or another I didn't. As we are all aware this maternity unit has had a lot of bad press recently and my heart goes out to all who have been affected. However, I think we need balance in our news and I wanted to share my experience. For my first child I had my heart set on a home birth due to an irrational fear of hospitals. Anyway, it wasn't meant to be and my son was far too cosy and to cut a long story short, 2 weeks over my due date he came out via an emergency c-section. Traumatized to say the least, the care that I received was fantastic, so much so that I didn't want to leave hospital!
With my second pregnancy, I obviously had more of an idea of what to expect and knew that I would be in hospital in the middle of a pandemic. I was encouraged to go for a VBAC, should that be what I wanted, and I was lucky enough to experience a natural birth after my cesarean. Again, I could not fault the staff that took care of me. The department really pulled together as a team during hard times and each individual dealing with me listened to my wishes and accommodated them. I have spoken to friends who are expecting and have worries as I really don't want any woman to be scared of what can be the most amazing experience ever. They can rest assured that at this time the maternity unit is run as a really tight ship with some brilliant midwives and doctors as well as the rest of the staff involved.
"Amazing support."
