"Lack of PPE in Outpatients"

About: North Devon District Hospital / Neurology

(as a service user),

I have visited the outpatient dept on 2 occasions recently and am very happy with my consultations and treatment however on both occasions I was worried about the lack of PPE I saw on staff walking around. As a Practice Nurse in a GP surgery we are required to wear a mask, visor, apron and gloves. The masks are changed at each session and the gloves and apron after each patient contact and the visor wiped down at each session. I saw clinical staff walking around / transferring patient's in beds with just masks on. I don't think this follows current infection control guidelines at such a risky time!

Dear SRob

Thank you for taking the time to feedback on Care Opinion regarding your recent visit to Outpatients. Firstly, I am glad to hear that you were happy with your consultations and treatment. I have also shared your PPE concerns with our Outpatient Management Team, Infection Control Team and also our Patient Experience Matron.

The Infection Control team have confirmed that our PPE guidance follows the Public Health England guidance relating to the Covid 19 risk pathways and activity. This includes the decision to enhance PPE recommendations in December 2020.

The Outpatient Management team have cascaded your feedback to their team to ensure that they are following the guidance correctly and internal updates regarding PPE requirements are sent to staff on a regular basis.

Thank you again for taking the time to feedback to us. Without valuable feedback such as this we are unable to improve the service we are delivering at this difficult time.

Best wishes

Lisa

Update posted by SRob (a service user)

It wasn't the outpatients staff who didn't have PPE it was a nurse and porter transferring a patient in a bed!

Dear SRob

As above, we do regularly remind all of our staff of the correct PPE guidance. We do take your comments seriously and the portering services were included in the areas we have sent your feedback to. Thank you again for taking the time to contact us.

Best wishes
