"Virtual breastfeeding support"

About: Community Services in Grampian

(as a service user),

I had my 2nd baby and experienced a totally different breastfeeding journey this time round. Nothing was simple and suffered bouts of mastitis and constant pain. Katheryn from breastfeeding group dropped me a message to say congratulations and ask how I was getting on as she remembered I had breastfed my first baby. I really appreciated that as I don't think I would of reached out for support if she hadn't contacted me.

She supported me for a further 3 months and also pointed me in the direction of other support including the breastfeeding helpline or my health visitor for things she was unsure of, but mainly just having someone on the other end of my phone listening day or night enabled me to continue our feeding journey for longer than I thought I'd manage. When I decided that I couldn't continue breastfeeding any more I was worried that I would be pressured to continue but she was so supportive and guided me on how to stop safely without leading to mastitis and for that I am very grateful. Its such a shame that no support groups are able to open for face to face support due to covid but it's brilliant that support is still out there

Dear aquilape85,

Thank you for taking the time to get in touch to share your feeding journey.

Our peer supporters are a vital part of our service and are literally worth their weight in gold, in supporting new mum’s.

Covid restrictions have unfortunately seen this support move to the virtual platform but the success stories I have heard have been very encouraging. While we would love it to return to face to face we will continue during lockdown to offer this virtually and have secured iPads from NHSG’s Welcome Ward -Person Centred Visiting group for this.

As restrictions ease we will to look to how we can safely enable peer supporters to deliver this much needed support face to face and again within the hospital setting.

May I wish you and your family well.

Regards

Liz
