Further to my last posting headed "Total hip replacement surgery" I would like to expand on the overall experience from pre-assessment to admission to ward 10 and my time at theatre.
I attended pre-assessment clinic during October 2019 with others due to have hip surgery. All went smoothly and I was seen by various health care professionals who would be attending to my care. I was well informed throughout and felt able to ask questions when necessary. On my admission to ward 10 staff were on hand to explain procedures in a helpful manner. Every member of staff spoke, no matter if they were nursing staff or domestic staff, which was welcoming.
As time drew closer for me to be taken to theatre staff from theatre came and accompanied me there. This I found very reassuring and added a personal touch - I was not just another patient going for surgery - I mattered. Prior to surgery various staff introduced themselves to me, explaining their role. During administering of lumbar anesthetic staff were there giving reassurance throughout. My experience of theatre was one which touched my heart, because of the tender care given in an informal but professional manner.
Back at the ward I rested for a time but by the following day I was encouraged to get out of bed and start walking with my crutches. Staff were always on hand if you needed anything but if not there was a buzzer close by. Friendly, professional, dedicated with a sense of humour is how I saw the nursing staff on ward 10.
Other healthcare professionals seen included a physio and OT's who all did their work in a helpful and friendly manner. I also was visited by the Consultant, Mr. Akhtar, on several occasions to check on my progress and if I had any questions. Very reassuring. What I also found reassuring was the fact if I had any questions at any time regarding my aftercare I could telephone the ward and speak to a member of staff. My overall experience of being a patient in Elective Orthopaedic Ward 10 was excellent. I am so grateful for all the care you provided - thank you.
