"Hospital discharge with nothing to cover bandage"

About: Victoria Hospital / Trauma & orthopaedics

(as a service user),

I am still stunned at the casual attitude to this incident. I was in Victoria hospital for a foot operation. In theatre the wound was dressed and my foot wrapped in a crepe bandage. When I was getting ready for discharge I asked for something to cover the bandage. I was told there was nothing available but “Dr says it won’t matter if the bandage gets dirty”. I pointed out the incongruity of walking outside in the rain in this bandage. Picking up unmentionable deposits then, as the bandage had to stay on for fourteen days, sleeping in it.

I fashioned my own protective cover out of a bin bag and some nonslip matting. It caused consternation amongst the staff who thought it unsafe and were reluctant to let me leave in it but who had no qualms about a grotty bandage.

“I don’t believe it "

Update posted by Ddstego (a service user)

I received a sincere email from Pauline and a phone call from Siobhan clinical nurse manager who promised this would be addressed with staff on the ward. I asked that this be treated as an incident for learning not as discipline.
