"I hope I gave my patients the same care and attention that I received."

About: University Hospital Hairmyres / Acute Medical Receiving Unit (AMRU) University Hospital Hairmyres / Emergency Department

(as a service user),

I collapsed at home and injured my ribs and hand, I treated myself with ice packs, painkillers etc. I thought I had tripped over something!  By day 3, I got a severe lecture from my husband and children and therefore made an appointment with my GP who promptly  sent me to Hairmyres.

From the receptionist, triage nurse (3rd year student),doctor, radiographers and porters all in A/E, my treatment was quick, efficient, professional and friendly. I was diagnosed with a pulmonary embolism, fractured ribs and hand and was given further investigations before being admitted to ward 2 (AMRU).

I never once saw a member of staff without a mask, or apron and hand washing was constant. Once again from nursing staff (can only remember Student Katie, SN’s Millie and Erins’ name so my apologies to others) and domestics, phlebotomists, pharmacists ,medical staff I was given first class, safe care. I retired early from this hospital a couple of years ago after nearly 30 years and this was the first time I had been at the receiving end. I only hope I gave my patients the same care and attention that I received.

Thank you very much to everyone; I have learned to fully appreciate our NHS ( and also trying to stop self diagnosing ) Wishing each and every one of you a happy , peaceful but most of all safe Christmas.

With deep gratitude

Dear Annie G

I am sorry to read that you have been unwell and required admission to hospital. It must have been a difficult and worrying time for you.

Having recently retired, you will be very familiar with the standard of care that we all strive for and to read such positive feedback from you has been both reassuring and encouraging.

Thank you for taking the time to share names of some of the staff involved. Many of them have expressed their appreciation and asked me to pass on their thanks to you.

I will ensure your comments are widely shared as you have kindly recognised so many members of the multidisciplinary team.

As healthcare professionals many self diagnose, however I am glad that you decided to seek further assessment. I hope that you are now recovering well.

Thank you again for your lovely comments.

Best wishes and I hope that you have a peaceful and safe new year.

Regards

Lise
