My husband was taken into hospital into critical care with what we thought was a chest infection or pneumonia. His breathing got progressively worse and it was decided to put him on a ventilator in the critical care unit. He had a heart attack and went into total organ failure. It was touch and go for the first couple of weeks and we were all convinced he wasn’t going to pull through. Then he started to pick up and we thought he might have a chance, but 2 days later he developed another bout of pneumonia due to being on the ventilator for so long. Once again we thought we were going to lose him. 3 days later he started to breathe on his own with the ventilator kicking in only when he missed a breath. He started to do so well, with his breathing, his liver and kidneys improving, although, he was still on dialysis, that the doctors decided to perform a tracheotomy. He is steadily improving, breathing on his own and receiving physiotherapy. We know that he will have a heart condition and he has copd, and he will probably not be as active as he used to be, and we know it could still go either way as they slowly withdraw the life support but if it wasn’t for the fantastic nurses and doctors in the critical care unit in Treliske, we know he wouldn’t be here with us now. The amazing care he has received, and the care and concern shown to us as a family is wonderful. I cannot praise the staff enough.
