The consultant whom I saw had a very unfortunate manner. Spoke to me in a very peremptory tone, asking lots of questions about events and dates, and medication I had taken, and expressing surprise when I could not recall every single detail. When I took time to think about the answer, they appeared impatient, and fired more questions at me. I am quite sure that all the information required was included in computer records and in the communication from my GP, but they seemed exasperated at my inability to confirm facts such as: when my previous surgery was (I NOW know it was in 2011 - because they did eventually search through the records! ); the name of the surgeon who had performed it; when the follow-up treatment had taken place; and exactly what had been done. Nor could I recall names of all the antibiotics I had been prescribed for frequent UTIs. (I find such medical terminology difficult to remember. ) Nor could I say how many mls of urine I pass each time I visit the toilet at night! I began to feel that this staff member thought I was either stupid or in the early stages of dementia - neither of which is true!
I felt uncomfortable, and frankly belittled by the condescending manner. I believe the nurses sensed my embarrassment, as they appeared to be sympathetic, giving me encouraging smiles. I think the doctor began to sense my discomfiture and eventually softened in tone a bit. I am sure they are a good gynaecologist and know the subject well, but the attitude to me as a patient was disappointing and upsetting. I was examined, which was OK, but two days later I developed yet another UTI, requiring more antibiotics. I am going to be invited back for further tests / treatment, but would really prefer to see a different doctor please.
