I was pregnant and suddenly started with horrible cramps in my abdomen. I knew something wasn’t right and the pain wasn’t subsiding with painkillers. I phoned an ambulance and explained my symptoms, and told them I suspected an ectopic pregnancy. An hour later a “clinician” phoned me back and said that there were no ambulances available for me, but that my information will be passed on to my GP, and I should expect a call that afternoon. This call never came and my pain was getting worse. I phoned my GP who told me that there was no information passed on to them and that I wasn’t booked for a telephone consultation at all!
I spoke to my doctor who booked me in for an ultrasound the next day (this is 2 nights now since my abdominal pain). I had to get myself up to the hospital in a taxi costing me £17. I had my ultrasound scan which revealed the ectopic pregnancy and I was prepped for emergency surgery within 30 minutes of my arrival.
My Fallopian tube had basically ruptured causing internal abdominal bleeding. If I’d left it any longer I could have developed sepsis and gone into shock. I’m disgusted by the fact I couldn’t get an ambulance sent to me for something so life threatening, and if I hadn’t phoned my GP myself, I might not even be here today. Appalling service.
