"Gender Identity Clinics"

About: Highly Specialist Services / Gender Identity Service (GIS) Leeds and York Partnership NHS Foundation Trust

(as a service user),

Leeds GIC spent two years with me on the waiting list, then after assessment and gave me too low a dose of HRT, so I'd seen no changes, wanted to refer me for surgery just after they'd upped it. Asked for breast surgery as well in that case, and they declined, saying that wasn't available, so I asked to wait a little on the increased dose first. Just two months later I spoke to a friend who had been referred to surgery for both at the same time and called them to ask them what the hell and they said oh, yeah, the rules have changed.

Well, jeez. Thanks for telling me.

So I asked please refer me as well, then. They said you'll need another appointment first. I said okay, give me another appointment. They said it will be a couple of months. I sigh and say whatever. This was in September. I ring up again in early December and they have no record of the request for an appointment, and it'll be two more months. I call again in February and they've run out of money for the year so it will have to be after April. I finally get an appointment for August, a full year after my last appointment, and when I was due to be referred for surgery anyway. All the staff has changed, my assessment seems to count for nothing, and I burst into tears on realising I'm basically going to have to start from scratch.

Eventually, months later, I get to the stage of referral again, and they refuse to refer me because I seemed too unstable, based on the fact I cried that one time while I despaired at their incompetence. They were insisting I had further counselling. I gave up, and asked my doctor for referral to Sheffield instead, and while I was waiting had counselling arranged through work just in case, which I didn't need but hey, it go me out of work for a day every so often and we had a nice chat. My counsellor thought they sounded like idiots. So did Sheffield when I got to see them, and they referred me pretty much straight away. Unfortunately by the time I was able to get an appointment the surgeon said I'd now too little left after years on HRT for the surgery I wanted.

Gave up on it altogether for years, now waiting for an appointment to at least see about cosmetic GCS.
