"The doctor was very patronising"

About: Royal Alexandra Hospital / GP Out of Hours

(as a parent/guardian),

I contacted nhs24 regarding my 3 week old baby who is distressed and unsettled. They referred me to out of hours gp at the RAH. The doctor was very patronising and I felt like they were giving me parenting advice rather than medical advice.

I told them I was combination feeding, breast and bottle, and they told me that they had never heard of that and it wasn’t allowed. I was shocked as both midwife and health visitor had said this was ok. They also told me that out of hours was “not for things like this” it was for emergencies only and I should have waited to speak to my gp on Monday. This doctor made me feel like a psychotic first time mum and said my baby was just nosey and liked to be held, even though the doctor a few days before diagnosed her with reflux and prescribed medication for her. I felt like walking out the room.

To top it off when I was leaving I was putting my baby in the Pram and the doctor asked I done that outside and tucked her in outside as they worked to a time schedule and their next patient was waiting - even though I had waited 20 mins to see them with a distressed and upset baby. Never in my life have a felt more patronised and that I wasn’t doing the right thing for my baby, I left the hospital very upset.

Dear footballsc75,

Thank you for sharing your experience on Care Opinion. I am sorry to learn your experience with your 3 week old baby. I hope your baby is on the mend. I note from the feedback that you attend RAH GP Out of Hours (OOH).

GP OOH over the past months have went through many changes to help improve on the patient pathway and I would be keen to discuss your experience further and learn from this. If possible can you contact myself on the following email address at Raylene.McLaggan@ggc.scot.nhs.uk to discuss further.

Thank you

Raylene McLaggan
