I attended BPAS Streatham for a surgical termination due to a foetal abnormality at 17 weeks. Obviously, I was emotional and nervous but absolutely everyone in the clinic was incredibly supportive and made me feel at ease (or as close to as I could manage).
I arrived and was greeted by friendly receptionist who apologised that there was a little wait due to a traffic incident nearby preventing staff from arriving. I appreciated this honest explanation and being kept in the loop. The nurse I saw made me feel comfortable and explained everything clearly. Then I was taken upstairs to wait for the procedure whilst I waited for the drugs to soften the cervix. I had a room to myself and nurses/midwives kept popping in to see if I was ok. After a couple of hours (standard waiting time for the drugs to work) I was taken to the theatre. I was met with another friendly nurse who inserted the cannula etc. Here I met the anaesthetist and surgeon who explained everything again and made sure I had no questions. Both were friendly and comforting. I appreciated the little ‘human’ things like a “I’m sorry you’re going through this” and a reassuring touch of my hand. Once I was in theatre, everything was explained clearly until I was put under GA. I came round 30 minutes later in recovery where I had another nurse looking after me. My blood pressure was very low and I felt sick so they kept me in recovery a little longer than others who come round without any complications. I was given an IV and anti-sickness pills. Not once did I feel alone or an inconvenience. After about an hour, I was taken to my original room, now sharing with another patient with a curtain between us. Again, the nurses and midwives were lovely and attentive to any needs. An hour or so later, after ensuring I had been to the toilet successfully, I was discharged.
Considering this was one if the hardest days I have gone through, the staff at the clinic were truly amazing even made me smile. I would recommend to anyone in a similar position.
