"I felt my basic care was not met"

About: Northern Ireland Ambulance Service / Emergency ambulance response Royal Victoria Hospital / Accident & Emergency

(as a service user),

I was diagnosed with COVID in Nov 20. 2 weeks into the illness my kidney stones started to give me a lot of pain.   I had to call for an ambulance which took me to the RVH ED.   I was given pain medication in the Ambulance, the Medics who took care of me were very professional and very caring.

When I was taken into ED I was put into an area for COVID positive patients.   I was there from 6. 30am until I arranged transport home at 3pm.   I was told I should come back the next morning for scans to verify I had Kidney Stones. I made the Dr aware that I have had 6 operations to remove stones as my body seems unable to pass them itself. The Dr had been very dismissive of me until he read my notes.   At no time during my stay was I offered any fluids or food.

Fluids are a necessity at any time but especially when I am suffering from Kidney Stones. I had to ring another ambulance that next morning at 1. 30 am as the pain was so severe. Again the Medics were very professional and caring. I was brought up to the RVH ED again.   I was taken for a scan at 9. 30 when they confirmed I had a stone on my left hand side.   Again during my stay no fluids were offered. I was sent home with pain medication at approx 2pm when my partner collected me.

I am awaiting a referral letter for further investigation.   I felt neglected and dismissed by the medical staff in RVH ED. The Dr said if we brought in everyone with Kidney Stones we wouldn't have any room for anyone else. I felt I didn't even get basic care I. e. fluids. While I understand the situation is extremely difficult and busy with COVID. Because of my experience I feel basic care is being forgotten about and patients are being treated as a nuisance.
