"My treatment at Accident and Emergency"

About: NHS 24 / NHS 24 (111 service) University Hospital Hairmyres / Emergency Department

(as the patient),

I live by myself in Glasgow but due to having chest pains I stayed overnight at my parents in South Lanarkshire. On Wednesday 2nd December my pain worsened and eventually I called NHS24. I spoke with a call handler, a nurse and then a locum GP. The doctor advised me to go straight to my nearest Accident and Emergency department which was at this point Hairmyres Hospital. I went through the proper channels and followed the advice of the GP which as stated was to go my nearest A&E immediately to "rule out a heart attack". I arrived at the hospital myself knowing the restrictions with Covid-19 wouldn't allow me to have a parent with me so I was already very upset and very worried.

The receptionist was very polite and helpful. Took my details and asked me to take a seat. I was called through to triage by a nurse. The nurse had a sheet of paper which obviously had my home address on it which is in Glasgow. They said to me that I was another one that "shouldn't be there". I didn't understand and asked what was meant by this. They then said to me that I was the third person that night that shouldn't have been there. That I should have gone to my local hospital which is the Southern General. I then explained that this was the closest hospital as I'm staying with my parents. They then repeated again that I shouldn't be here. I again, expolained that I was sent by a GP. The answer to this was that they get paid per patient - the hospital doesn't. This made me feel so embarrassed and like I wasn't welcome and wouldn't receive the proper treatment.

I instantly regretted going into A&E. I already suffer from anxiety and panic attacks which can be confirmed by my medical records and this was beginning to make me feel extremely anxious and upset. The nurse then started complaining about someone in the waiting area who had a partner with them, as this was taking up a seat. The person they were talking about was elderly and was partially sighted. But again this wasn't of my concern. I shouldn't have to know or worry about another patient. I was then given an ECG from another nurse who was so lovely, very caring and calming, took my results to the doctor and came back and told me the doctor wanted bloods taken. The first nurse asked in a rude manner very rudely and in a skeptical and unprofessional manner what the doctor wanted bloods done for. The manner it was asked in was very unsettling to me. I have Crohn's disease and have an ileostomy and have been treated hundreds of times at this hospital over the last 15 years and never have I ever came across a nurse so rude, abrupt, and this unprofessional and I hope I never have to deal with anyone with a similar attitude again.

Dear scoreboardfr79,

Thank you for sharing your story with us on Care Opinion. I was sorry to read that you had been unwell, and that you had difficulties in being seen when you attended Hairmyres A&E. This must have been a very frightening time for you, and I was sorry to read that your experience did not meet your expectations.

I would like to review your contact with NHS 24 to establish that your care was managed appropriately, and to identify any learning which may result from your story. Would you be kind enough to contact my team at patient.experience@nhs24.scot.nhs.uk and provide us with your details in order that we can look into your feedback?

I hope you are now feeling much better. I look forward to hearing from you.

Best wishes,

Andrew
