"ITU staff are absolute angels"

About: Wexham Park Hospital / General medicine

(as a relative),

My mum was recently admitted with Guillain Barré syndrome but sadly went on to suffer a large bleed in her brain. She was moved to the ITU where she received the most incredible care, compassion, respect and dignity throughout her time there.

The Consultant gave us all the information we needed and we all agreed that a DNR was in her best interests. The nurses were so caring not only to Mum but to us as well. The following day we met with staff again and decided to remove life support. We then spent time with the Specialist Nurse who was wonderful and talked us through the organ donation process Mum had signed up to. Sadly Mum was not able to donate as she is still alive over 24 hours later. We spent quality time with Mum and the nurse played her favourite music (Queen! ) but eventually we knew she wasn't going to pass yet and made the decision to say our goodbyes.

At every step Mum has been treated with such kindness and dignity even though she appears to have no conscious response. It's the hardest thing to go through but the ITU staff are absolute angels and I will be forever grateful for their kindness. She has been able to remain in their care until a quiet private room on a ward became available which again I feel very grateful for. I will be sending a card to the wonderful staff we met but I hope anyone else whose loved one visits ITU is reassured by this review that they are the very best people you could hope to have around them.

Dear Mel,

What a lovely comment to read, especially at this hard time for you to write it, we are so pleased that ITU made your mum comfortable and were able to support the family at this tragic time. Please accept my condolences.
