"Recovering from alcohol addiction."

About: One Recovery Bucks / High Wycombe

(as a service user),

I was referred to Bucks recovery after owning up to my Doctor that I was drinking dangerous amounts on a daily basis to block out pain and anxiety from being in pain and the side affects of taking heavy doses of pregabalin.   After a serious accident and surgery in 2014 I was left with severe residual pain and ended up taking a cocktail of prescription drugs that ultimately were making me more ill than they were doing good. Unable to sleep due to side effect if Pregabalin I was necking up to 2 bottles of wine a night just to black out and get some peace.

I hit rock bottom as my 28 year marriage came to an end and made the decision to get some help as I could no longer cope and was unable to get better on my own. I kicked the medication into touch with the help of my Dr who referred me to the awesome team at Bucks Recovery to help with my alcohol addiction.

There I was given lots of advice especially on the dangers of going cold turkey, of how to reduce safely and to work out my personal issues of drinking to not have to feel emotions I could not cope with.   I was given lots and lots of encouragement, there was no judgement when I had a bad day and did drink too much.

I was given access to an amazing alcohol recovery mentor ..thank you so much Mark I am so grateful for your support, Jade at the detox clinic who explained so much to me and to Suzy who ran the Thursday Alcohol group. Alcohol became my crutch and my jailer and without the support of the team at Bucks Recovery I would not be free today.

When I signed off from the service today I was asked what my goals were going forward, initially I was adamant I wanted to be Alcohol free but I told Marc today I now know I can drink occasionally and safely  (just not on wine - I hate the stuff) and there was no judgement that my goal had changed, just a well done and I cannot thank him enough for his support.

Hi Billie-Jo,

Thanks for taking the time out to share your experience of using our service. It sounds like you have really benefited from the multi -disciplinary colleagues you have worked within ORB. I will ensure they hear your feedback.

It is so great to hear that you feel you were provided with good support, information and advice around alcohol. What is great is that working with staff you found that they engaged with you showing one of our core values of being non judgemental. We know that we cant build therapeutic relationships with our service users without being non judgmental.

Keep working on moving forward with your recovery and away from alcohol being that crutch you spoke about, as you know from your experience how damaging that can be.

Can I take this opportunity to wish you all the very best.

Regards

Tracy
