My elderly father in law was discharged home from Cherry Ward at St Peters Hospital in Guildford, Surrey recently. He is a mentally alert gentleman, fantastic sense of humour but quite immobile and has some difficulties with communication.
I have seen Photographs of him today after he was discharged and am shocked at his weight loss over the week he spent there. What is far more shocking is that during the period of his stay nobody shaved him or helped him to clean his teeth, a whole week without any oral care whilst on oxygen is disgraceful and as a retired nurse I am horrified and this basic lack of nursing care and maintenance of human dignity . Covid may be here but this is no excuse for letting basic standards of care fall to these levels. Staff also failed to read his history and note that he needed all his fluids thickened to stop him inhaling them.
I appreciate the NHS is under stress but this level of abandonment is shameful.
