"Awesome care for my wonderful wee mum"

About: University Hospital Hairmyres / General Medicine (Wards 9-12)

(as a relative),

Dedicated NHS staff delivered awesome care to my wonderful wee mum

I called an ambulance for my mum and she was admitted via A&E to ward 10 Hairmyres Hospital, East Kilbride . She had contracted covid19 and was breathless, anxious and very lethargic. She was put into a side room at the nurses station and  was commenced on Intravenous fluids and Oxygen. At the nurses station she was always in view of the nurses. The staff were all AMAZING!!!!!!!!

I would phone the ward every day and Kate the ward Clerkess  would inform Charge nurse Julie who kept me informed daily of my Adorable wee mum’s condition. Charge nurse Julie would leave the phone on my mum’s pillow where I could speak to her and let her listen to her favourite music and sing to her to try to relieve her anxiety. Julie is a marvellous manager and runs a fabulous ward. This was an awesome gesture as it allowed me communication with my mum. The  nurses were always so very busy but never made me feel anything was a bother. They were all so professional and caring!!!!

Staff. Nurse Kathleen was my mum’s nurse and she was simply the best. She is definitely an Angel Without Wings.!!!!!My mum was very fond of her and nothing  was too much bother. I would phone my mum on her mobile and due to the high level of oxygen she found it difficult to speak. I would chat away to her as her mobile lay on her pillow and told her I loved her and she is the best wee mum in the whole world. I  Informed her that I needed a secretary with the amount of people that were enquiring after her. I would let all her family know how she was doing every day. Mum told me over the speaker phone that “ I love you the best in the whole world.” The nurse said to me “ I am in bits” It took a lot for mum  to try to speak. I was so grateful for the nurses putting mum on her phone or I may have missed that. .I will always treasure that moment!!! A very special touch!! Nurse Kathleen also arranged for my mum’s parish priest Monsignor Miller who gave my mum the sacrament of sick and with it she felt peace. He found her chirpy which was great to hear. I think she was so glad to see him.

Dr Robert was a super young Doctor who discussed the end of life care with my mum and then with me. He was very professional and sensitive.in delivering this awful news to me.My mum was very fond of him too. I always thought mum would get better and come home again. I was so distressed and shocked.

Kirsty the Palliative care Nurse came to see mum, me and  my daughter. She is very professional, with a lovely bedside manner and treated my mum with dignity at all times. She was very informative and would assess my mum’s care each day..

On night shift I always phoned to see how mum was and yet again was always greeted by lovely nurses who would go and pass info onto mum or tell me how she was doing,

One night Nurse Stacey whom I had several times said could you phone your mum and put it on speakerphone so I did nothing so I said mum are you there” Aye” as clear as day “it’s me I love you, I love you” In floods of tears I could not believe it. The lovely Nurse Stacey said “don’t ! you are starting me off” Another precious memory from my wee mum. I would not trade that moment for a million pounds!!! Thank you nurse Stacey!!

I got a call from the night nurse that my mum had passed. I met Night Nurse Rona who again had a wonderful caring manner. I was devastated, inconsolable as I had lost my most precious gift my wee mum. She looked peaceful, rested and no more noisy oxygen. I held her hand and encouraged her to walk the stairway to heaven and the gates were now opened and all her lost loved ones were there. When her hand went cold I knew she was there.

THANK YOU ALL WARD 10 STAFF  you are are great team of Health Care Professionals!!!

My wee mum would not have got better care than this even if she had gone private.

You were all so busy and worked your socks off and me and my family thank you so much for all you did for our wee mum!!! You are overworked and underpaid!

YOU ARE ALL A CREDIT TO OUR NHS

Dear summs

May I firstly express my sympathy to you and your family following the sad loss of your "wonderful wee mum". I can appreciate that this must be a very difficult time for you and your family, and I am very grateful that you have shared such positive feedback on Care Opinion.

Many people are justifiably anxious at the moment and we recognise it is very important to receive up-to-date information around your relative's condition and I'm so pleased the staff looking after your mum were able to help alleviate your anxieties, as well as ensuring that you were able to talk to your mum. I know from reading your post that this was a great comfort to you both.

I will ensure that your post is shared with all the staff who were involved in caring for your mum; your kind comments will be greatly appreciate by them all, I know for sure.

Sending my very best wishes to your family at this very sad time and thanks again for taking the time to send your thanks to all our wonderful staff.

Lesley
