"Poor practice"

About: West Park Hospital

Took my friend for admission. I am my a carer for my friend. Tried to help her settle in and was marched out as 'they do not allow visitors'. My friend has mental illness and being wrenched from all she knows. Lack compassion. Friend is being fed with no update, no meetings, no information and is left on her own on isolation for long periods of ime.

We are sorry to hear about your experience and hope that your friend may feel able to raise this with a member of the ward team so that we can look into the specific concerns more fully.

Due to the pandemic we are endeavouring to reduce the number of people who are not patients or staff who come onto our wards. This is part of our efforts to reduce the risk of the spread of Covid-19, however we would expect that wards support patient’s and family members/carers on an individual basis dependent on their needs at the time. We appreciate that coming into hospital can be an extremely distressing experience for both patients and their family members, friends or carers and supporting people with compassion and understanding is important to make sure that their admission is as positive an experience as it can be.

Unfortunately due to Covid restrictions we do currently require patients to self-isolate for five days following admission, however this does not mean that staff will not engage or support with activity to alleviate frustration and boredom that may occur. We would always expect that patients are kept involved in their care and treatment during their admission and have the opportunity to take part in any meeting related to them.

If your friend would like to discuss her concerns further she can speak with a member of the team or contact Sally Jones (Matron) or Fran Bergin (Locality Manager) 01325 552019
