My wife and I had our first baby on Sunday 15th November after a gruelling 19 hour long labour. The midwives who attended to us before, during and after the childs arrival (my wife stayed 4 days after the boys birth) were simply phenomenal. Not just the midwives either- everyone from the porters, to the cleaners to the reception team were exemplary.
Obviously it was quite a nerve wracking time for us but the approach our active labour team took was warm, honest and friendly. It really made a massive difference to our experience and we really felt like “one of their own”. I could hear in the days following the delivery that we were not alone in this- most of the new parents on the post natal wards were given care and attention that seemed well above and beyond the standard I’d previously expected. The post natal experience was very professional and efficient but equally kind and empathetic.
The midwife who spent 8 very difficult hours with us through the night changed shift at 7.45 am but sought my wife out the next day when she started her shift- just to say “Hello” and meet the child she’d been monitoring through the labour process. I really can’t thank her enough- just for the way she addressed us and looked out for us in what was a very dark and frustrating time for us. It really has made me appreciate not only the roles of the midwives a lot more, but those in the NHS/healthcare in general. They genuinely are heroes. It’s not a job I think I could do but I’m so very grateful there are those out there who can and do.
I really wanted to leave a card/flowers (and may yet still send some) but there were so many people to thank and it just didn’t seem like it would be enough. I hope they know who they are and what they have done for us and many many more
