"Admission to hospital with heart problems"

About: Royal Cornwall Hospital (Treliske) / Cardiology

(as the patient),

I am an extremely fit, even if I say so myself! I have never been admitted to hospital before and I can't remember the last occasion I went to the Doctors. Early one morning I had finished an hours session on my exercise bike at home when my heart rate rocketed and I felt extremely unwell. I had never experienced anything like it before. After 30 minutes an ambulance was called and I was taken off to Truro hospital. Incidentally my wife and I had only moved down to Cornwall .

Anyway, long story short, I ended up spending nearly 4 weeks in hospital. It was discovered I had suffered a heart attack at some time in the past and my heart was damaged. I suffered another episode of extreme heart rate whilst in hospital and had to have my heart stopped and restarted. I was then fitted with a defibrillator in my chest.

Throughout this was an extremely frightening time both personally and for my wife and family. Due to COVID there was no visiting allowed on to the wards. I spent my time on the Cardiac care unit and the cardio investigation unit. I cannot do justice to the professionalism, care and compassion of all the staff on these units. From the cleaners to the surgeons nothing was too much trouble. Although I was scared and anxious throughout the staff reassured me constantly. Everybody I came into contact with on these wards deserve the highest of praise and they really are wonderful human beings. If I had to mention two people who really stood out it would be Toni and Gary on the Cardiac care unit. During my second attack whilst in hospital I was really scared that I may die. They were both calmness personified and tried to put me at ease. Gary really was the ultimate professional nurse doing all the medical checks and procedures. Toni was my guardian angel, she held my hand, mopped my brow and talked me through the whole ordeal. She really is a special lady.

I am so thankful to all the staff on these two wards at Truro hospital. I saw first hand what these people deal with on a daily basis and I am totally in awe of them. Nothing I say can thank them enough.

Dear Lurkio,

Thank you for taking the time to share your story with us. Please firstly accept my apologies for the delay in responding to you on here. I was very sorry to read that you needed to come into our hospital following your ordeal, this must have been very frightening for you and your family. I can't imagine how difficult it must have been to be in hospital for nearly 4 weeks and unable to see your family due to our visiting restrictions during the pandemic. I was however, pleased to see that you found the staff on both the Coronary Care Unit and the Cardiac Investigation Unit to be professional as well as caring and compassionate.

It is heart-warming to read about how Gary and Toni were able to act calmly when you were having your second attack, holding your hand and helping you to feel at ease during what was a very scary situation for you - and indeed for anyone to go through!

I am responding to you as a member of the Patient and Family Experience team here at the Trust, but I will ensure both Toni and Gary get a special thank you from the Trust and that the rest of the ward staff see your story as well.

Thank you again for taking the time to share your story with us, I hope that you are now home and recovering well.

Best wishes,

Jess
