I am an extremely fit, even if I say so myself! I have never been admitted to hospital before and I can't remember the last occasion I went to the Doctors. Early one morning I had finished an hours session on my exercise bike at home when my heart rate rocketed and I felt extremely unwell. I had never experienced anything like it before. After 30 minutes an ambulance was called and I was taken off to Truro hospital. Incidentally my wife and I had only moved down to Cornwall .
Anyway, long story short, I ended up spending nearly 4 weeks in hospital. It was discovered I had suffered a heart attack at some time in the past and my heart was damaged. I suffered another episode of extreme heart rate whilst in hospital and had to have my heart stopped and restarted. I was then fitted with a defibrillator in my chest.
Throughout this was an extremely frightening time both personally and for my wife and family. Due to COVID there was no visiting allowed on to the wards. I spent my time on the Cardiac care unit and the cardio investigation unit. I cannot do justice to the professionalism, care and compassion of all the staff on these units. From the cleaners to the surgeons nothing was too much trouble. Although I was scared and anxious throughout the staff reassured me constantly. Everybody I came into contact with on these wards deserve the highest of praise and they really are wonderful human beings. If I had to mention two people who really stood out it would be Toni and Gary on the Cardiac care unit. During my second attack whilst in hospital I was really scared that I may die. They were both calmness personified and tried to put me at ease. Gary really was the ultimate professional nurse doing all the medical checks and procedures. Toni was my guardian angel, she held my hand, mopped my brow and talked me through the whole ordeal. She really is a special lady.
I am so thankful to all the staff on these two wards at Truro hospital. I saw first hand what these people deal with on a daily basis and I am totally in awe of them. Nothing I say can thank them enough.
