"Staff were more than helpful"

About: The Ulster Hospital / Ward 9

(as the patient),

Despite my reluctance to come to hospital, the staff on ward 9 were more than helpful.

Sarah went through my admission notes and made me feel welcome and comfortable. She went out of her way to check on me a couple of times and was sympathetic when I was awake in the night.

The day staff on Sunday were very busy, I believe they were on a reduced staff based on what I was told.  There was a 1st year student nurse. I have forgotten her name but she was fantastic. She accompanied me to my MRI scan and assisted me as I was finding it difficult to manoeuvre myself because of the pain.

On the Sunday night Sarah was back accompanied by another nurse called Lyn and a third one who’s name I cannot remember. Jenny maybe? They were all very helpful and friendly.

My only disappointments were that I was not given a pillow. This is not the fault of the staff because staff did go to try and find one on the Saturday and the Sunday. It was not ideal to have a 2 night stay with bed rest during the day with no pillow. Again, this was not the fault of the staff.

It took a very long time to receive medication when it was requested.

On Saturday, the doctor requested for me to have medication at 5.45 and despite my asking several times, I got nothing until 8.15pm. I understand the staff are stretched and they are very busy but I was in extreme pain at that point and really needed the medication.

Dear L C.

Thank you for sharing your experience. Our staff at Ulster Hospital Ward 9 will greatly appreciate your kind words.

Colleagues leading in care on this ward will review matters in relation to pillow provision and timely pain management and will post a response to advise re: actions to be taken.

Thanks again

Best wishes.

Conor

Hi LC,

Firstly thank you for your kind words in relation to ward 9, and our staff. I will be sure to pass on your kind words to Sarah, Jenny, Lyn and our first year student Karen.

I am sorry to hear that there was no pillow available for you during your stay at the weekend, this is not an experience we want our patients to have and I will look into ordering more pillows this week to try and prevent this happening in the future.

I am extremely sorry to hear that there was an issue with the promptness of your pain relief and whilst you highlight that the ward was short staffed on the Sunday, due to sudden illness, we try and promote timely analgesia for all patients. I am disappointed that we failed you on Sunday. I will discuss circumstances with the staff present on that day and look at how we can minimise the risk of this happening again in the future.

I hope you are now recovering well at home.

Best wishes,

Rachael
