"COPD help"

About: Inverclyde Royal Hospital / Respiratory Medicine

(as a service user),

I have COPD.  I am also not an individual who attends the GP for what I would term minor illnesses.  However, prior to being diagnosed I had attended my GP complaining of chest pains on several occassions..  My diagnosis did not come to light until after I had collapsed at home then rushed into hospital.

Since the pandemic, I feel my health is deteriorating and have a great fear of both contracting and passing the disease onto my immediate family.

I feel since being diagnosed the only support that has been provided to me so far has been an appointment with the nurse and was curious if there are any treatments for COPD that could help me live as normal a life as is possible ??

Please advise ... Many thanks in advance :-)

Dear KC-20

Thank you for getting in touch.

I am very sorry that your health has been deteriorating and I completely understand your fears regarding COVID.

The treatment for COPD includes using an inhaler (if you have been prescribed one); keeping active; using the breathing techniques to help clear your chest; recognising the symptoms of a chest infection and getting help.

You can also ask your GP, Practice Nurse or Community Respiratory Nurse Specialists to refer you to Pulmonary Rehabilitation which helps people with lung conditions increase their physical activity. It also offers advice about medication,m, pacing activities, eating, weight management and psychological issues.

The Chest Heart and Stroke Association have produced an information leaflet about living with COPD which you might find helpful. www.chss.org.uk/documents/2013/08/c1_living_with_copd-pdf.pdf.

The website https://mylungsmylife.org/I-have-copd/ also has useful information on how to manage your condition.

There is also a local COPD Support Group in Greenock which is run by Your Voice: http://yourvoice.org.uk/copd.html

I hope you find this information useful.

Kind Regards

Alison McKinnon
