"Mum’s stroke"

About: NHS 24 / NHS 24 (111 service) Scottish Ambulance Service / Emergency Ambulance Victoria Hospital / Admissions Unit 1 (Emergency Medical) Victoria Hospital / Stroke

(as a relative),

My mum was admitted at the start of October following confusion and a facial droop. She had unfortunately suffered from a stroke. A doctor in A&E had a lengthy discussion with my dad about their findings, treatment and management going forward. I am so grateful this doctor took time in a very busy, high pressured environment to give us this information.

My mum was transferred to admissions unit 1, where she was admitted by a lovely, kind nurse who reassured my family she was settled and to contact the unit anytime for an update. The next day staff in AU1 informed us my mum would be transferred to Ward 42 - the stroke ward.

To keep a long story short I just want to say a massive thank you to everyone in ward 42 who was involved in my mum’s care - from nursing staff to AHPs and doctors. Due to COVID measures, it has been extremely difficult and stressful not being able to see my mum in hospital. My dad was always well informed by nursing staff and was able to speak to a doctor on many occasions. My mum was so well cared for during her stay and my family are extremely grateful for that

It’s the little things that nursing staff did for my mum such as putting all her cards on display on her patient board, plaiting her hair and encouraging and motivating her to do things when she really couldn’t be bothered.

If you could please also pass on the family’s thanks to NHS 24 and the ambulance crew who were also involved - their care and attention lead to quick treatment and management.

We have a long road to recovery ahead and may have to adapt to a new normal but with the support that has been provided by the NHS I’m sure we will get there. My mum is so happy to be home.

Thank you so much - I really can’t express how grateful the family is to everyone involved

Dear Daughter27

Thanks so much for sharing your story at what, no doubt, remains a difficult time for you all. I'm so sorry to learn your mum suffered a stroke, however I'm pleased she is back home surrounded by her caring family. From what you have shared, your heartfelt thanks to the staff involved in caring for your mum shines through loud and clear.

The staff within the Victoria Hospital sound amazing and you are absolutely right, it's the little things that sometimes leave a lasting impression. I'm sure the staff there will be delighted to read your kind comments. Thanks also for taking the time to thank NHS 24 and the Ambulance Service. I will ensure your story is shared more widely within NHS 24 so that our staff can be reminded of the excellent service they are providing to patients and their families.

Very often NHS 24 is the first point of contact in a situation such as your mum's, and we rarely get to hear what follow up care is provided should a patient be referred to the Ambulance Service or to A&E for example. Your story is an excellent reminder of our hugely important role in providing timely and safe patient care, so thanks so much for sharing.

If you wish to share any more detail about the call made to 111, it would be great to hear further from you. This would mean I could share your feedback with the staff directly involved. I can be contacted at patient.experience@nhs24.scot.nhs.uk

With best wishes to you all

Take care

Shona

Dear Daughter27,

Thank you very much for taking the time to share your feedback here on CareOpinion. I am so sorry to read about your mothers stroke. That must have been an extremely worrying time for her, your father, and of course yourself and wider family. I can't imagine how difficult it must be to have someone you care about, ill in a ward and being unable to see them.

However, it is so lovely to read about how this truly unfortunate situation was made somewhat easier it would seem by the professionalism and the caring manner in which the NHS staff involved treated your mother and father. It sounds like the nurses and doctors in the Victoria carried out their duties exactly how we would expect and a bit more. Well done to them!

It is also really pleasing to read that the response to the initial event was also carried out with are and attention resulting in swift treatment. As we all know, there is little time to react in cases of stroke and being aware of the signs and symptoms is key so credit to our close colleagues in NHS24 and of course, our wonderful crew. I would be happy to pass on your comments to the crew but I would require a few more details. If you would like for this to happen then can you email sas.feedback@nhs.scot and let us know the date, time and location that the SAS vehicle attended your mother and her name. I would also be very grateful,if you choose to do this, if you could make reference to your CareOpinion username so if it is someone else that gets the email, they can easily link it to this post.

Thanks again for your post and I wish your mother a speedy and full recovery.

Kind Regards

Alan
