"Visit to A&E"

About: George Eliot Hospital - Acute Services / Accident and emergency

(as the patient),

On visiting A&E at the George Eliot hospital was taken into a room for some Obs to be carried out was taken aback when the nurse suddenly just grabbed my face mask at the front pulled it down and asked me to put a thermometer under my tongue.

Firstly I would have expected to at least be asked to remove my mask and touching it only by the ear loops!

Secondly I would not expect my temperature to be taken using a device which requires putting into my mouth when everywhere else in the hospital seems to be using contactless or in the ear thermometers.

Can someone advise me if this is still considered normal to use in a pandemic??

Dear Mr Dave

Thank you for getting in touch - I'm sorry your experience was not as good as we would hope. We have discussed your concerns with the staff in Emergency Department and as a result the department has taken the decision to record temperatures via the axilla route (under arm) instead.

We have been unable to identify the nurse who touched your mask, but your comments and description of how the nurse made you feel have been raised with the staff during our nursing huddles.

Once again, thank you for getting in touch to raise your concerns.
