"Miscarriages"

About: Royal Cornwall Hospital (Treliske) / Gynaecology

(as a service user),

I’ve been to EGU and EPU multiple times this year due to recurrent miscarriages and every time I’ve been the nurses Zoe and a Sarah have been amazing. They’re so kind and caring, they let you ask questions or just cry and they go above and beyond to try and make a horrible situation slightly better. I can’t thank them enough for their compassion. Sadly though there is literally no aftercare, my green notes were handed in, I wasn’t pregnant anymore and that was that. Mentally it’s lost broken me every time I’ve gone through this and I know I’m not alone. The support available for parents who’ve had a still birth or neonatal death isn’t as accessible for couples who’ve experienced a miscarriage and it should be. It doesn’t matter if you carried your baby for weeks or months you still lost your baby and the hospital should provide after care for those women going through awful experiences.

Thank you for the time taken to write with feedback. I am sorry it has taken some time to reply. We do appreciate all feedback in the hope we can improve our service.

I am sorry that your experience of care was not consistent. Your positive feedback for the team is very much appreciated. Sadly as you explain, we do not offer any in house follow up for early pregnancy loss. We understand that many of our patients would benefit from follow up / ongoing care, but we do not facilitate this at present. Other units around the south west find themselves in this similar position. We are keen to hopefully improve this in the future. Our patient information leaflets do offer the Miscarriage Association contact details, where patients can contact them via a variety of ways for ongoing support.

We would also encourage patients to discuss their ongoing needs with their GP who maybe able to offer support from other agencies.

As you will be aware, the team in EPU / EGU would like offer support in future pregnancies, so please keep in contact with them.

Kind Regards

Sarah

Advanced Nurse Practitioner EGU / EPU

Thank you so much for taking the time to feedback during what must be a very difficult time. I'm so sorry to hear of your experience and loss. I will discuss with the team about how we can improve services for couples who have suffered a miscarriage and make sure support is. If you would like to contact me directly my email address is mary.baulch@nhs.net.

Please take care

Mary
