After a very long early stages of labour my midwife made the decision to have me continue my labour journey in the Royal Alexandra Hospital. This involved a 2 and a half hour drive from Oban, during which time (as well as contractions continuing) I was devastated about having to deviate from my plan to have the baby in my home town.
However, on admission to the RAH all of my worries and fears were totally alleviated, From the very start the experience was excellent. We were offered a water birth when we were admitted and decided this would be ideal for us, as such we were moved to the community midwife unit and what an absolute dream this was. The whole unit was very relaxing and every care had been taken to add additional touches to make the experience even better (such as fairy lights and candles). Every midwife we encountered was so friendly and did everything to put our mind at ease.
As my waters had been broken for over 24 hours I had to stay in for 24 hours after the birth, however even this was a pleasure as the midwifes did everything they could to help my new wee family to relax, bond and have an enjoyable time. I never thought I would come away from giving birth relaxed and wishing I could do it all again but this is exactly how I felt. My husband even joked that he felt like he should have been handed a bill for the spa break! I would highly recommend attending the CMU to anyone looking to have a baby in the RAH.
