"Not a happy place"

About: Royal Cornwall Hospital (Treliske)

Today I visited the eye clinic. I visit a few consultants every year and I have to say that the eye department is the worst of all. The hostile attitude from receptionists & the nurses who mutter awful things about elderly patients in front of other patients.

The doctors and eye experts are amazing - but there is something fundamentally wrong with this department.

I have been a patient for 5 years here now and it’s always the same level of toxic atmosphere.

The music is too loud in the waiting room, most patients are elderly and the nurses are coming out and shouting names getting frustrated.

Also, yes there’s a pandemic - but I are the additional barriers in place actually protecting the reception team? No because they wander out of their offices and fail to socially distance anyway.

The extra barriers are hazardous to patients with eyesight problems. A mask, the gel and the screens are absolutely good enough and this is what other NHS reception desks have. And it works.

Thank you for taking the time to post your comments about your experience. It is positive to hear that you speak highly of our medical and eye colleagues, but it saddens me that your experience of us is as you describe. This is not what I expect for my patients and the people we care for.

I would really like to use your experience as learning for the teams involved and arrange either a virtual meeting or telephone call with you and the Clinical Matron and Service Manager for our Eye Department. If you would be happy to work with us please contact our Patient and Family Experience team by leaving a message on 01872 252793 or email rcht.patientexperience@nhs.net and we will make contact with you to arrange a convenient time to talk.

I will ensure that your feedback to date is shared with my team leaders to discuss with their teams but please accept my sincere apologies for your experience of our services.

With Kind Regards

Ian Moyle-Browning - Head of Nursing (Specialist Services & Surgery)
