"The Section that saved me"

About: Forth Valley Royal Hospital / Adult mental health (Wards 2,3) Forth Valley Royal Hospital / IPCU (Ward 1)

(as the patient),

I was held by NHS Forth Valley under a Section 28. Although I didn't know it at the time, and fought against staff and the system, I was experiencing a manic episode. I arrived at the Hospital under the supervision of Police Scotland in handcuffs.

Dr Shankar immediately recognised the symptoms, I was initially held for a weekend which quickly extended to a month. It took me days to realise that this was for my own good. NHS nursing staff and Consultants provided me with world class care and looking back I can say in absolute confidence that I owe them my life.

The stay in the MHU (Mental Health Unit) was life-changing. Staff were friendly and welcoming. I spent time on Wards 1 and 3. I'm grateful to Nurses Fiona and Mark, and Student Alex (who was brilliant) on Ward 1. On ward 3 the list only grows, Dr Ayeer seemed to understand me better than any other Consultant at that point. Ward 3 Nurses are too many to count. A few assistants and students stand out. Nurses Noé, Lucinda and Iona—my thanks. Every member of staff deserves mention here. I've picked a few because they went above and beyond, but really all NHS and Serco staff were brilliant.

Mr Loughran, without you I wouldn't have been capable of accepting my condition. And finally, Dr Shankar thank you. I knew I could trust you the moment I saw you.

Hello Jstew,

Thank you for taking the time to write a post acknowledging the assistance and care you recieved from staff. Although it must have been difficult for you Im delighted you are on the road to recovery. It is particularly pleasing when we recieve reports about staff to thank them for their input and this often give staff a boast.. I have taken the time to share this with staff and I wish you well for the future.

Best wishes

Thank you for your kind words. It is always a challenging and difficult decision even for the clinicians when coming across such a crisis. I am so pleased that you felt you got the help you needed in time and made a satisfactory recovery. I have conveyed your observations to the rest of the team and it is always a pleasure to see the smile on everyone's faces encouraging them to keep up the good work.

I'm sure you will soon be doing justice to your immense creative potential and I wish you well for the future.
