In two recent stays in Aberdeen Royal Infirmary I have had to be sent home because the catering department were unable to meet my nutritional needs due to my allergies. Allergies are very common and I feel it is ridiculous that the one place that is supposed to help you get better cannot provide appropriate nutrition. It can be so easy nowadays to make food allergen free when cooking from scratch, which for many meals they do. I do have 3 allergies but this shouldn’t matter as they are some of the most common 3 in the top ten list. A hospital should always provide allergy friendly foods for all patients who need them and this needs to improve. They did try, but so many mistakes, like cheese being sent in an omelet and rice pudding for dessert when I have a milk allergy. Had I not noticed it could have had serious consequences.
