"Cancelled Surgery due to potential Covid cases"

About: Glasgow Royal Infirmary / General Surgery (wards 64, 65, 66,& 67)

(as a service user),

I have been self isolating for 2 weeks waiting to go for surgery tomorrow on an abscess. I have had my pre op assessment and Covid test which was negative. This morning I have received a call to say my surgery along with all other surgeries have been cancelled. I was told it’s a management decision due to concerns over increased Covid cases. I feel exasperated and annoyed that this has been cancelled.

This surgery is a follow up surgery. I had surgery in October last year to treat my initial abscess. I was due to see a consultant in May this year as a follow up which was cancelled due to Covid. This appointment was rescheduled to November  as a telephone consultation which I did not feel was appropriate. I contacted my consultant and was given an appointment, quicker. After this appointment surgery was agreed, and was expected to be in November. I received a call asking if I could attend surgery in early October which I agreed too as I feel I need the surgery, as I have pain caused by the abscess. I have delayed work events to allow this surgery to go ahead as I feel this is a priority for me. It’s disappointing it has now been cancelled with little reason, and no reschedule.

Dear DOM26

I am very sorry that your surgery has been cancelled at short notice and completely understand you exasperation and annoyance. We are working hard to continue with our remobilisation plan, however, we have seen an increase in the number of CoVID-19 and Emergency Department admissions which has impacted on our elective procedures

Please accept my sincere apologies but given the current situation we are unable to provide a definitive timescale regarding a date for your surgery. We will contact you regarding a new date and should you have ongoing or new concerns please contact your Consultant.

I appreciate this response might not be what you were wanting to receive, however I am sure you will appreciate with the increase in CoVID community prevalence we have had to review our remobilisation plan for all elective procedures.

Regards

John Stuart

Chief Nurse
