"Aunt admitted to Craigavon after a fall at home"

About: Craigavon Area Hospital / 1 East Gynaecology Craigavon Area Hospital / Emergency Department Northern Ireland Ambulance Service / Emergency ambulance response

(as a relative),

The only issue I did have was that it took an ambulance over 6 hours to come and take her to hospital and then she remained in the A/E department until the next evening. If this process had not to have taken so long she may not of become as ill as she did. She required a chest drain and was transferred to the recovery ward to be cared for.

I have nothing but praise for the nurses and doctors who cared for her in that department.   They kept me fully updated by telephone at least two to three times a day.   My aunt is elderly so did not have a mobile phone and they were very kind and let me speak to her at least once a day.

She  was then moved to I think 1 west gynae where again she received excellent care.   Everyone is doing a great job under very difficult circumstances and doing there very best for their patients.   Thankfully my Aunt was discharged a week later and is doing very well at home.

Dear zara ann

May I begin by passing on our sincerest apologies for the distress your aunt and you experienced after her fall.

We appreciate our communities understand the additional pressures our wonderful Hospital Trusts and Emergency Services are under during this exceptional time however, when a loved one is in distress any delay is a second too long let alone hours.

I will raise your concern and points to my control room colleagues who would have a better understanding of NIAS operations therefor, may I request some more details such as the date and the 'pick-up' postcode so we can research in detail what happened. Our email address is careopinion.admin@nias.hscni.net or you can call me on 07867 136 597 and please know all correspondence is confidential.

If however, you don't wish to contact us please trust that all stories whether they are good, bad or indifferent are forwarded to whatever directorate they refer to as our policy is to learn from experiences and grow with knowledge.

Our kindest regards

Claire Edgar

Good afternoon

Thank you for taking the time to tell us about your Aunt’s experience. Unfortunately at times there are no inpatient beds available, which results in patients saying longer in the Emergency Department. As Head of Service (Acting) I was pleased to see that whilst in the Emergency Department she received the care and attention that she did. We understand how difficult it is for families at the minute when their loved ones are in hospital and I am pleased that our staff kept you fully informed and that you got the opportunity to speak to your Aunt. We will also share your feedback with the staff in 1 west. I hope that your Aunt is continuing to improve.

Regards

Paul Smyth

Acting Head of Service
