This was my first experience of surgical eye treatment and to be honest I was frightened and worried. My fears were eased after my first consultation to confirm i needed a cateract operation for1 eye only and i was also reassured that all will be good afterwards.
2 weeks after my first visit the operation was completed taking about 15-20 mins and about 2 hours in total for the complete visit.
The staff from reception through to discharge nurse were lovely kind covid safe and very helpful.
The only things i would have preferred to have been done differently (in my case as not everyone would want this) Would have been to know a bit more about the actual procedure and method of local anaesthetic As this was my biggest fear and it wasn't until i was on the operating table that i had enough courage to ask the anaesthetist and surgeon about the procedure which they both explained very clearly and sympathetically.
Maybe i should have asked earlier or looked it up online but i was afraid to do so and now wished i had done as there was virtually no pain or discomfort apart from the piercing white lights in the eye being operated on.
I chatted away with the surgeon during the procedure, after asking him was it ok to do so as i found it took my mind off the operation.
Maybe one day a mild relaxant will be possible to have just while the operation takes place but after all I am a man so i think that says enough.
There was no pain etc for the rest of the day but once the anaesthetic wore off i did get many of the symptoms i had been told to expect ie headaches scratchy feelings in my eye soreness and watering eye but this eased after around 24 hours using painkillers and especially When starting with the Various eye drops every 4 hours. I am now just over 1 week Post opp with no or little irritation in the eye.
Overall a great experience and my eyesight on the eye operated on is absolutely amazing.
A big thanks to all at SpaMedica and the NHS and Specsavers for a fast speedy safe almost pain free experience especially during these most difficult of times.
Kindest regards
Hugh Williams
